What is the Best Carrier Oil for Pet CBD Tinctures?

In recent years pet owners and veterinarians have started to notice the numerous health benefits CBD products provide to dogs and cats.

The CEO at BioSpectrum CBD is the medical physician. Dr. Melius insists on only the highest quality ingredients and products. He took on the task of looking into carrier oils for pets. BioSpectrum CBD uses medium chain triglyceride oil from coconuts in their human tinctures. He wondered if that was the best oil for pets. Dr. Melius is comfortable with human physiology but he looked to experts in animal physiology and pet nutrition for advice.

The American Veterinary Medical Association does not specifically endorse supplements for pets so that professional organization isn’t a good resource for information about pet CBD. Dr. Melius looked to other veterinarians for help. Omega fatty acids are not produced by our furry friends and are considered essential nutrients. Most processed pet foods are high in omega 6 fatty acids but have little of the longer chain Omega 3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

Dr. Lisa M. Freeman, professor of clinical nutrition, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University says, “Long-chain fatty acids from fish oil have some potential benefits in terms of anti-inflammatory effects and might be helpful in heart, kidney, and skin diseases.”

The American Kennel Club endorses fish oils specifically for their abundance in Omega 3 fats. “Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA act as anti-inflammatory agents, and therefore can be used for inflammatory diseases including skin allergies (atopy) and dermatitis, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, epilepsy, and some types of cancer. Fish oil is used widely in cats and dogs, as well as horses.”

Dr. Melius also spoke with local veterinarians who gave him the general advice that MCT oils and fish oils are both great for pets but they agreed DHA and EPA in fish oils make the fish oils a better option for pets.

The next task was to source the best fish oils. Dr. Melius’ research led him to wild tuna oil sourced from Iceland. Tuna oil has 25% DHA, much higher than salmon, krill, or cod oils.

Dr. Melius sourced an R&D sample barrel of Tuna oil from Iceland. It was deodorized, tasted great and lacked any distinctive “fishy” odor. His broad-spectrum CBD distillate dissolved into it nicely using a proprietary blending technique. His team sent out a couple hundred samples for pet owners to try and the results were as amazing as he expected.

The decision was made to proceed with producing pet tinctures in the highest quality oil he could source for pets. BioSpectrum CBD sources their deodorized tuna oil from Iceland. Their tuna oil comes with analytics proving quality, Omega fatty acid analysis and proof it contains zero harmful heavy metals.
